Ferruginea is a genus of cricetidae mammals, a group of small rodents, and are found in the Americas, from Canada to Argentina. They have short tails and long ears, and their fur ranges from reddish-brown to greyish-brown. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits, and insects and can active during the day and night, but they prefer to be active at night when it is cooler outside. They live in burrows or nests that they build underground or in trees or bushes and can solitary animals but may form small groups when food is abundant. They reproduce quickly with females having up to six litters per year with an average litter size of four pups each time.
