Ochracea Collection

Ochracea is a genus of mammals belonging to the family Herpestidae. It includes two species, the African striped weasel and the Malagasy striped weasel. Both species are small, with a body length of up to 30 cm and a weight of around 200 g. They have long bodies with short legs, and their fur is usually grayish-brown in color with white stripes along their backs, and are mainly active at night and feed on small rodents, insects, lizards, frogs, birds' eggs and carrion. Ochracea live in burrows or crevices near water sources such as rivers or streams, and are found in parts of Africa south of the Sahara Desert as well as Madagascar. These animals play an important role in controlling pest populations by preying on rodents that can damage crops or spread disease to humans and livestock.
