Hippopotamidae Collection

Hippopotamidae is a family of large, semiaquatic mammals native to Africa, and are the only living members of the family Hippopotamidae and are classified as either hippopotamus amphibius or hippopotamus amphibius. The two species of hippos are the common hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius) and the pygmy hippo (Choeropsis liberiensis). Hippos have barrel-shaped bodies with short legs and a large head, which is supported by a thick neck. They have four toes on each foot, with webbing between them that helps them swim. Their skin is thick and grayish-brown in color, but they can also be pinkish or reddish in some areas due to mud baths they take to keep cool. They spend most of their time in water during the day and come out at night to graze on grasses near rivers or lakes. Despite their size, they can run up to 30 miles per hour when threatened.
