Eastern Gorilla Collection

The Eastern Gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is a species of great ape found in the forests of East and Central Africa, and is the largest living primate, with males weighing up to 270 kg and standing 1.7 m tall when upright and has a distinctive black fur with silver-gray patches on its back, arms, legs and face. The Eastern Gorilla is an endangered species due to habitat destruction, poaching for bushmeat and illegal pet trade. It lives in small family groups led by a dominant male known as a silverback, who protects his group from other gorillas or predators such as leopards or humans. Its diet consists mainly of leaves, stems, fruits and insects. The Eastern Gorilla's population has declined by more than 70% over the last 20 years due to human activities such as logging and mining in its habitat range; it is now listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
