Simensis Collection

Simensis, also known as the African pygmy mouse, is a species of murid rodent found in Africa, and is the smallest mammal in Africa and one of the smallest mammals in the world. The body length ranges from 2 to 4 cm and its tail length ranges from 1 to 3 cm. Its fur is grayish-brown with white underparts and it has large ears and eyes relative to its size. It feeds on insects, seeds, and other small invertebrates. Simensis lives in burrows or nests made out of grasses or leaves near water sources such as rivers or streams, and is an active forager during both day and night but tends to be more active during twilight hours when temperatures are cooler. This species can be found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa but it has been classified as Near Threatened due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as agriculture, urbanization, and deforestation.
