Antarctic Fur Seal Collection

The Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus gazella) is a species of Otariidae, or eared seal, native to the sub-Antarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, and are one of the most abundant species of fur seal in the Southern Hemisphere and can be found on beaches, rocky shores and ice floes. These animals have a thick layer of blubber which helps them survive in cold temperatures. Males are much larger than females, reaching up to 2 meters in length and weighing up to 300 kg. They feed mainly on fish, squid and krill but also consume other marine mammals such as penguins when available. Breeding takes place during summer months when males establish territories on shorelines for mating purposes. Females give birth to a single pup each year after an 11-month gestation period before returning to sea for feeding purposes. The population is currently stable although there has been some decline due to overfishing and climate change effects on their food sources.
