New Zealand Fur Seal Collection

The New Zealand Fur Seal (Otariidae) is a species of marine mammal found in the waters around New Zealand and Australia, and are one of the largest species of fur seal, with males reaching up to 2.3m in length and weighing up to 300kgs. The fur seals have a thick, dark brown coat with lighter patches on their chest and muzzle. They feed mainly on fish, squid, octopus and crustaceans which they catch by diving underwater for up to 20 minutes at a time. The New Zealand Fur Seal is an important part of the marine ecosystem as they help maintain healthy fish populations by preying on smaller fish species that would otherwise overpopulate areas if left unchecked. They also provide food for other predators such as sharks, orcas and sea lions. Despite being protected under law since 1894, their population numbers remain low due to threats from human activities such as fishing nets entanglement and habitat destruction from coastal development projects.
