Subantarctic Fur Seal Collection

The Subantarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) is a species of otariid, or eared seal, found in the subantarctic regions of the Southern Hemisphere, and are medium-sized seals with males reaching up to 2.3 meters in length and weighing up to 250 kilograms. Females are smaller, reaching 1.5 meters in length and weighing up to 90 kilograms. Their fur is thick and brownish-gray on their back with lighter fur on their underside. They feed mainly on fish, squid, and crustaceans which they catch by diving underwater for up to 15 minutes at a time during their foraging trips. Breeding occurs annually from October through December when males establish territories near rookeries where females come ashore to give birth and nurse pups before returning to sea after about four weeks, and are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List due to their wide distribution range across the Southern Ocean islands as well as conservation efforts that have helped stabilize population numbers over recent years
