Oenanthe Collection

Oenanthe is a genus of mammals in the family Pitheciidae. These animals are found in Central and South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, and are arboreal primates that inhabit tropical rainforests and dry deciduous forests. Oenanthe species have long tails that help them balance while climbing trees. They feed on fruits, leaves, flowers and insects. Their fur is typically gray or brown with white markings on their face and chest area. Oenanthe species are active during the day but can be seen at night as well. They live in small groups of up to five individuals which consist of one male and several females with their young offspring. These animals play an important role in seed dispersal by eating fruit from trees which helps to regenerate the forest ecosystem they inhabit.
