Walruses are large marine mammals that live in the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding areas, and are related to seals and sea lions and have a thick layer of blubber for insulation against the cold water. Walruses have long tusks made of ivory, which can grow up to 3 feet in length. They use their tusks for digging, fighting, and hauling themselves out of the water onto ice floes. Walruses feed mainly on mollusks such as clams, but they also eat fish and other invertebrates. During breeding season, walruses gather in large groups called "haulouts" on shorelines or ice floes where they give birth to their young. Walrus populations have declined due to hunting by humans over the years, but conservation efforts are helping them recover slowly but surely.
