Weddell Seal Collection

The Weddell Seal is a species of earless seal found in the Antarctic region, and is the most southerly distributed mammal in the world, and can be found as far south as 78°S, large body with short flippers and a long head, reaching up to 3m in length and weighing up to 300kg. Its coat is dark grey on top with lighter grey or silver underneath, which helps it blend into its icy environment. The Weddell Seal feeds mainly on fish, squid and krill, diving down to depths of 600m for food. It also uses its thick layer of blubber to stay warm in the cold temperatures of Antarctica. Due to its unique adaptation for life in extreme conditions, it has become an iconic symbol of Antarctic wildlife conservation efforts worldwide.
