Western Lowland Gorilla Collection

The Western Lowland Gorilla is a species of primate found in the tropical forests of Central and Western Africa, and are the most widespread gorilla species, living in both lowland and montane forests, and are typically smaller than other gorilla subspecies, with males weighing up to 300 pounds and females weighing up to 200 pounds. Western Lowland Gorillas live in small family groups led by a dominant silverback male. They feed mainly on fruits, leaves, stems, bark, insects and other invertebrates. These gorillas have been heavily impacted by poaching for bushmeat as well as habitat destruction due to logging and mining operations. As a result of these threats they are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Conservation efforts such as protected areas have helped stabilize their population numbers but more work needs to be done if we want future generations to be able to enjoy these amazing animals in their natural habitats.
