Statue of US President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), Parliament Square, Westminster, London (now re-located slightly to stand in front of the Middlesex Guildhall) - a replica of the original piece by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, erected in Lincoln Park Chicago. In the rear can be seen The Buxton Memorial Fountain originally constructed (as seen) in Parliament Square but removed in 1940 and placed in its present position in Victoria Tower Gardens in 1957. The King and Queen drove in state from Buckingham Palace to the House of Lords for the opening of Parliament. Their majesties were escorted by a Captain's Escort of Household Cavalry and preceding the Royal Coach was a carriage containing the crowns. At the Victoria Tower, Westminster the king and queen were met by the great offices of state and proceeded to the Robing Room. To salute their arrival at Westminster, a troop of Royal Horse Artillery fired 41t guns from St James's Park.
Picture shows: Yeomen of the Guard, in their colourful uniforms, paraded for inspection at the Houses of Parliament for the state opening.

The Burghers of Calais in the Victoria Tower Gardens, c1935. The Burghers of Calais sculpture, Victoria Tower Gardens, Millbank, Westminster, London. Bronze sculpture by (1840-1917), with the Houses of Parliament in the background. Calais fell to Edward III of England in 1347, after a siege of almost a year. Six citizens offered their lives to save the town but were spared when Edward?s wife Philippa intervened. The sculpture dates from 1895, althugh it was not placed in this positiion until 1915.
