endemic and vulnerable; world's most range-restricted crane. Inhabits vleis, grassland, karoo scrub and agricultural lands. Feeds on bulbs, seeds, roots, invertebrates, fish, frogs, reptiles and small mammals. Damages crops, especially maize, wheat and lucerne.
