Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage - Zambia - Africa
Pan troglodytes
Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is recognised as the worlds largest dedicated sanctuary for orphaned chimps. As chimpanzees are not indigenous to Zambia it is not possible to free-release them locally, therefore 2, 000 acres of forest land has been designated to the chimps.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a chimpanzee's hand and foot come into focus, showcasing the remarkable similarities between human and chimpanzee anatomy. This image was captured at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in Zambia, Africa, home to over 2,000 acres of forest land dedicated to providing sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees. Chimpanzees, scientifically known as Pan troglodytes, are not native to Zambia, making it impossible to release them back into the wild. Instead, Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage serves as a vital refuge for these primates, offering them a safe and nurturing environment. The intricate details of the chimpanzee's hand reveal its dexterity and opposable thumb, which is a hallmark of primate evolution. The foot, with its toes and arch, is a testament to their agility and arboreal lifestyle. As an anthropomorphic touch, the chimpanzee's fingers appear almost human-like in this close-up, emphasizing the close evolutionary relationship between humans and chimpanzees.
