Meet the Jaws of the Outback - DH-3473, Australia's Largest Grasshopper!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this incredible snapshot captured by Don Hadden, we are introduced to a true Aussie legend - the Giant Hedge Grasshopper. With females reaching an impressive 90mm in size, it's no wonder they're known as giants! Feasting exclusively at night on hibiscus coffee and citrus plants, these grasshoppers have quite the refined palate. However, their insatiable appetite can lead to some serious damage when large infestations occur. So watch out for these leaf-chewing mischief-makers! But here's where things get interesting - unlike other grasshoppers that rely on calls to attract mates, our giant friends prefer a more practical approach. They simply meet up with potential partners at their favorite food source! Talk about efficiency. Found across northern Australia and even venturing as far south as northern NSW, these valiant creatures conquer vast territories with their powerful legs and segmented bodies. Their resilience is truly awe-inspiring. And let's not forget about those eggs! After laying them toward the end of the dry season, they remain dormant until heavy rains bless the land once again. It's like nature has its own built-in alarm clock! So next time you're exploring Down Under and stumble upon one of these magnificent insects in action (like this photo taken in Kupungarri), be sure to appreciate their unique charm and remember - size does matter when it
