Harlequin Ladybird - with 7-spot Ladybird on the left

SPH-3268
Harlequin LADYBIRD - with 7-spot ladybird (on left)
Harmonia axyridis
The Harlequin is a voracious predator and easily out competes our native ladybirds for food. This introduced alien threatens our 46 native ladybird species, as well as many other UK insects, including butterflies and lacewings.
It comes in a range of patterns or colour variations (forms or morph). Originally from Asia, it was probably imported on flowers from Europe.
The Harlequin problem started in North America, where they were thought to be an attractive biological control agent. H. axyridis is still being sold in the USA and continental Europe for pest control.
Its numbers are increasing annually.
Steve Hopkin

Spot the Intruder - A Colorful Confrontation Between Ladybird Legends!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Steve Hopkin, we witness a truly extraordinary encounter between two iconic ladybirds. On the left, proudly displaying its classic red shell adorned with seven distinctive spots, stands the native 7-spot Ladybird - a beloved symbol of luck and charm in the United Kingdom. However, it seems that an unexpected visitor has crashed this party! The Harlequin Ladybird, hailing from Asia and known for its invasive nature, boldly challenges its British counterpart. With their vibrant colors and contrasting patterns on full display, these two beetle beauties engage in a face-to-face standoff. Will they find common ground or will their differences prevail? Only time will tell! This snapshot perfectly captures not only the stunning diversity of wildlife found in Europe but also highlights the ongoing battle between introduced species and native inhabitants. It serves as a reminder that even within our own backyards, fascinating stories unfold every day. So take a moment to marvel at this mesmerizing clash of cultures among insects – where East meets West – leaving us all wondering who will emerge victorious in this miniature showdown!
