EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a muskox (Ovibos moschatus) can be seen grazing peacefully in the tundra of Nome, Alaska. The muskox, a large, robust herbivore, is a member of the Bovidae family, with distinctive curved horns and a thick coat that provides insulation in the harsh Arctic climate. Muskoxen are native to Europe and Asia, but were introduced to North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The muskox in this image is in the process of feeding on willows, a common plant found in the Arctic grasslands. Muskoxen are herbivores, and their diet consists mainly of grasses, sedges, and willows. They are often found in large herds, which provide protection against predators such as wolves and polar bears. The muskox in this photograph is standing in a horizontal, exterior view, facing the camera. The image is in color and is a wide, landscape format. The muskox is an important species in the Arctic ecosystem, and its reintroduction to North America has been successful in restoring populations that had been decimated by hunting and habitat loss.
