Sentinel R1

A Sentinel R1 surveillance aircraft is pictured in the Middle East.
Royal Air Force personnel, deployed to 902 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) in the Middle East, continue to support coalition troops on the ground in Afghanistan.
Until recently, 5 (Army Co-operation) Squadron have been operating simultaneously over the skies of Afghanistan and Mali, highlighting the adaptability and capability of the asset and its personnel.
Now operating solely from 902 EAW in the Middle East, it is in direct support of Operation Herrick. As a result of the transition of security responsibility in Afghanistan, it routinely provides support to ISAF and Afghan forces.
5 (AC) Squadrons Sentinel aircraft uses the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) to provide invaluable information used in the tracking and prosecution of enemy ground forces.
As with all modern aircraft in the world of Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Sentinel is unable to operate without the support of its engineering and support staffs. They work hand in hand with personnel from 902 EAW support elements in order to ensure the crew and aircraft are continually prepared for sorties

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a Sentinel R1 surveillance aircraft in action over the Middle East. Deployed by Royal Air Force personnel from 902 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW), this aircraft continues to provide crucial support to coalition troops on the ground in Afghanistan. Previously, 5 (Army Co-operation) Squadron operated simultaneously over both Afghanistan and Mali, showcasing the adaptability and capability of this asset and its dedicated personnel. However, it now operates solely from 902 EAW in the Middle East, directly supporting Operation Herrick. As security responsibility transitions in Afghanistan, this Sentinel aircraft routinely assists ISAF and Afghan forces by utilizing advanced technology such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI). These features enable it to gather invaluable information for tracking and prosecuting enemy ground forces. In the world of Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), modern aircraft like the Sentinel heavily rely on their engineering and support staffs. Working hand-in-hand with personnel from 902 EAW's support elements, they ensure that both crew members and the aircraft are always prepared for sorties. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the unwavering commitment of our armed forces who work tirelessly to protect our nations' interests abroad while providing vital assistance to those on the front lines.
