EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a U. S. Army AH-64D Apache Helicopter at Kandahar Airfield in 2011. The AH-64Ds were commonly deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, where they operated without the Longbow Radar due to the absence of armored threats. Developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), the Apache is a powerful twin-engine army attack helicopter. With over 800 Apaches currently in service with the US Army and more than 1,000 exported worldwide, it has become an iconic symbol of military might. The Apache first saw combat action during the US military operation in Panama back in 1989 and was later utilized extensively during Operation Desert Storm as well as various low-intensity conflicts and peacekeeping missions across the globe, including Turkey, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Kandahar Airfield played a crucial role for both American and British forces during their operations in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014. Part of this airfield was known as RAF Kandahar, serving as one end of the "Air Bridge" that connected RAF Brize Norton in the UK to support ISAF airborne forces based there. Located approximately ten miles southeast of Kandahar city, Kandahar International Airport served not only as Afghanistan's second international airport but also one of its largest military bases capable of accommodating over two hundred military aircraft. This image showcases both the strength and versatility of this remarkable aircraft against a backdrop that represents years of strategic military operations carried out by coalition forces fighting for stability and security in Afghanistan.
