Frederick William Burton Collection

Frederick William Burton (1816-1900) was an Irish painter and art collector. He was born in County Cork, Ireland and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He became a renowned portrait painter, with many royal commissions to his name. His most famous work is The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, which depicts a tragic moment between two lovers from opposing sides of a feuding family. He also painted landscapes and religious works, as well as being an avid collector of Old Masters paintings. Burton was appointed director of the National Gallery in London in 1874, where he remained until his retirement in 1894. During this time he oversaw major acquisitions for the gallery including works by Rembrandt and Titian. His legacy lives on through his works which are now housed at various galleries around the world including The National Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
