Nathaniel Currier Collection

Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) was an American lithographer and printmaker, who founded the firm of Currier & Ives with his business partner James Merritt Ives. He was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts and apprenticed as a lithographer in Boston in 1833. He established his own lithography business in New York City in 1835. His prints were popular during the 19th century, depicting scenes from everyday life as well as historical events such as the Battle of Bunker Hill. His work often featured bright colors and vivid details that made them stand out from other prints of the time. He also produced maps, advertisements, book illustrations and more. Currier & Ives became one of America's most successful printmaking firms during its heyday between 1840 and 1907, producing over 7500 different images during this period.
