Fortunino Matania Collection

Fortunino Matania (1881-1963) was an Italian artist and illustrator who is best known for his realistic portrayals of the First World War. Born in Naples, he began his career as a political cartoonist before becoming a war correspondent for the Illustrated London News. He produced over 500 drawings of the conflict, depicting scenes from both the Western and Eastern Fronts with an incredible level of detail and accuracy. His work was highly praised by contemporaries such as Winston Churchill, who called him “the most remarkable battle artist of all time”.
