William Cornwallis Harris Collection

William Cornwallis Harris (1807-1848) was a British artist, explorer and naturalist. He is best known for his work in the field of natural history illustration, particularly his paintings of African wildlife. He also wrote several books on the subject. Harris was born in London and educated at Eton College before joining the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1825. He served in India and Africa before resigning from the navy to pursue his interest in art and exploration. In 1836 he published "Sketches in South Africa" which detailed his travels through southern Africa over two years, including sketches of wildlife he encountered along the way. His work had an influence on later generations of artists and explorers who followed him into Africa. Harris died at sea while returning from a voyage to India, but left behind a legacy that continues to inspire today's artists and adventurers alike.
