David Octavius Hill Collection

David Octavius Hill was a Scottish painter and arts advocate who is best known for his painting of the First Free Church of Scotland in 1843. He was born in 1802 and trained as an artist in Edinburgh, where he became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He was also an active member of the Arts Association, which promoted art education and exhibitions throughout Scotland. In addition to his painting career, Hill also worked as a lithographer and photographer. He is most famous for his painting The First Free Church of Scotland, which depicted over 500 people gathered together to celebrate the formation of the new church.
