Joseph Highmore Collection

Joseph Highmore (1692-1780) was an English portrait and historical painter. He was born in London, the son of a lawyer, and studied art under Sir James Thornhill. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1718, and his work was highly sought after by wealthy patrons. His portraits were particularly admired for their realism and attention to detail. Highmore also painted many religious works, including altarpieces for churches throughout England. He is best known for his series of paintings depicting scenes from Shakespeare's plays which were commissioned by John Boydell in 1786. Highmore's work is still highly regarded today as some of the finest 18th century British painting.
