Frederick Richard Pickersgill was a British painter and illustrator, known for his works of historical and literary subjects. He was born in London in 1820, the son of a bookseller. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1840 to 1844, where he won several prizes for his work. After leaving the Academy he worked as an illustrator for books and magazines such as The Illustrated London News. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1888 and he was elected an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1867. He also wrote several books on art theory and technique which were widely read by artists of his time. Pickersgill's work is still highly regarded today for its technical skill, attention to detail, and its ability to capture a sense of drama or emotion in each painting or illustration.
