Edward John Poynter (1836-1919) was a British painter and draughtsman who is best known for his classical, allegorical and biblical paintings. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in London, where he served as President from 1896 to 1918. He also served as Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904. His works are characterized by their grand scale, meticulous technique, and attention to detail. Examples include 'Israel in Egypt' (1867), 'The Catapult' (1869), 'The Visit of the Queen of Sheba' (1881), and 'Dante and Virgil in Hell' (1885). Poynter's work has been exhibited widely throughout Europe, including at the Paris Salon, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery exhibition in London, Munich International Exhibition in Germany, and Vienna International Exhibition.
