Louis Prang Collection

Louis Prang (1824-1909) was a German-born American printer, lithographer, and publisher who is credited with introducing the art of chromolithography to the United States. He was born in Breslau, Germany and immigrated to Boston in 1850. Prang established his own lithographic firm in 1856 and quickly became known for producing high quality prints. He also published a series of educational cards featuring images of plants, animals, and other natural objects that were used by schools across the country. In addition to his work as a printer and publisher, Prang was an active member of the arts community in Boston. He founded the first school of design in America at MIT and organized several international exhibitions showcasing American art. His influence on American printmaking has been recognized through numerous awards including an honorary degree from Harvard University.
