Albert Henry Payne Collection

Albert Henry Payne (1812-1902) was an English artist and engraver. He is best known for his illustrations of the works of William Shakespeare, which he produced in a series of engravings between 1845 and 1867. He also illustrated books by other authors such as Walter Scott, Thomas Moore, and Charles Dickens. Payne was born in London to a family of artists. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1827 to 1830 and then went on to become an apprentice with the engraver Robert Brandard. His work was highly acclaimed for its technical skill and attention to detail, often being described as 'the finest line engravings ever made'. Payne's work has been exhibited in many galleries around the world including The British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and The Louvre in Paris.
