Frans Jansz Post was a Dutch painter who is best known for his landscapes and depictions of the Brazilian wilderness. He was born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1612 and began painting at an early age. Post traveled to Brazil in 1637 with the Dutch West India Company, where he spent three years painting the local flora and fauna. His paintings were incredibly detailed and depicted both the beauty of nature as well as its harshness. Post returned to Holland in 1644, where he continued to paint until his death in 1680.
