Robert Falcon Scott Collection

Robert Falcon Scott was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions in the early 1900s. He is best known for his ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition of 1910–1913, during which he and four of his companions died while trying to be the first to reach the South Pole. Scott's expedition was ultimately unsuccessful, as Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen beat them by five weeks. Despite this failure, Scott's legacy lives on through his diaries and letters from the expedition, which provide insight into life in Antarctica at that time. His courage and determination have also been celebrated in books, films, plays and other works of art.
