John Thomas Serres Collection

John Thomas Serres (1759-1825) was an English marine painter, born in London. He was the son of a French refugee, who had been forced to flee his home country during the French Revolution. Serres studied under the landscape painter Francis Hayman and later became a member of the Royal Academy in 1793. He is best known for his paintings of naval battles and coastal scenes, which were highly praised by contemporary critics. His works often featured dramatic lighting effects and vivid colors that captured the drama of naval warfare. In addition to his paintings, he also wrote several books on art theory and technique. Serres' work is still highly regarded today as some of the finest British marine painting from this era.
