Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist, best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Born in 1811 in Connecticut, she was the daughter of a Calvinist minister and sister to seven siblings. Stowe wrote many books on religious topics before writing Uncle Tom's Cabin, which became an instant success when it was published in 1852. The novel depicted the harsh realities of slavery and had a profound impact on public opinion about slavery, leading some to credit it with helping to start the Civil War. After the war ended, Stowe continued to write books that addressed social issues such as racism and sexism.
