Bartholomaeus Spranger Collection

Bartholomaeus Spranger was a 16th-century Flemish painter and draughtsman. He was born in Antwerp, but moved to Prague in 1585 where he became court painter to Emperor Rudolf II. His style combined the Mannerist elements of his native Flanders with the classical influences of Italy, creating a unique hybrid style that would come to be known as 'Prague Mannerism'. His works often featured mythological scenes populated by elegant figures with elongated limbs and exaggerated poses. He also produced many portraits, including one of Rudolf II himself. Spranger's influence can be seen in the works of later artists such as Rubens and Rembrandt, who both admired his work greatly.
