Mostar, the Old Bidge over the Neretva river, Bosnia and Herzegovina Featured Photographers Image

Mostar, the Old Bidge over the Neretva river, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Old Bridge (Stari Most) reflected in Neretva River, Bosnia and Hercegovina, at dusk, long exposure. The bridge is a famous tourist destination and was destroyed in the Bosnian War in 1993 but rebuilt ten years later.
Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
In 2005 the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar was added to the Unesco world heritage list

1863 Huxley from Ape to Man, age-toned Featured Photographers Image

1863 Huxley from Ape to Man, age-toned

Ordered series of primate skeletons. The Frontis engraving by Waterhouse Hawkins from the first edition of Huxley's 1863 "Evidences as to Man's Place in Nature". In this book Huxley presented his evidence that man was descended from the apes. It was published in reaction to Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" 1859. Though this image is often interpreted as indicating a line of descent, it is more intended to show ordered variation in limb bones and posture as well as the clear skeletal similarities in the group. The image has been quoted as an inspiration for Rudolph Zalinger's famous Time-Life 1965 image "The Road to Homo Sapiens" (page 40-45, Nature Library Early Man). That iconic image has become known as "The March of Progress". The artist for this work, Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, was famous for his pioneering dinosaur reconstructions but lectured against Darwinian evolution

Waianapanapa Sunrise Featured Photographers Image

Waianapanapa Sunrise

The Road to Hana is an amazing and probably Maui's most popular drive. One of the must stops on the way is the black sand beach. The water is cold, treacherous and shark infested. Waianapanapa State Park boasts a black sand beach thata??s simply unparalleled on the island of Maui, or anywhere else for that matter. Ita??s nestled in a private cove, the pitch black granules glisten, dark and mysterious a?? there is something about it that draws people here. Created long, long ago by the rough surf pounding on a fresh, bubbling lava flow, courtesy of Haleakala. It took a millennia or more to be ground down into a beach. The beauty of the turquoise coastal beaches of Hawaii are almost indistinguishable from those of the Bahamas, French Polynesia, Malau, Hawaii, Cancun, Costa Rica, Florida, Maldives, Cuba, Fiji, Bora Bora, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Beach, Smugglers Cove, Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, or other tropical vacation travel destinations
