Raqqa Collection

Raqqa is a city in Syria located on the banks of the Euphrates River and has been an important trading center since ancient times, and was once part of the Umayyad Caliphate. During the Syrian Civil War, it became a stronghold for Islamic State militants, who declared it their capital in 2014. The city suffered extensive damage during a US-led coalition campaign to liberate it from ISIS control in 2017. After liberation, Raqqa was left largely destroyed and its population decimated. Today, reconstruction efforts are underway to rebuild the city and restore its infrastructure. Despite this progress, many of its citizens remain displaced due to ongoing violence in Syria's civil war and economic hardship caused by sanctions imposed by western countries on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.
