The drop from Kates to the Creg

Tom Sheard (AJS) approaches Creg ny Baa in the 1921 Junior TT. He finished third that year but won the Junior in 1922, Stanley Woods recalled that the publican of the Keppel Hotel, Creg ny Baa, used to leave a yard broom outside so spectators could sweep the gravel off the road on the approach to the bend to aid the riders braking

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from BikeSport TT Race Pics, we are transported back to the thrilling world of motorcycle racing in the early 20th century. The image captures Tom Sheard, astride his AJS bike, as he fearlessly approaches the treacherous Creg ny Baa bend during the 1921 Junior TT. As Sheard navigates through the winding road with remarkable skill and precision, we can almost feel our hearts race alongside him. It is no wonder that he secured a commendable third place finish in this particular race. However, it was in the following year that Sheard truly made his mark by clinching victory in the Junior TT. What makes this photograph even more intriguing is Stanley Woods' recollection of an endearing gesture by the publican of Keppel Hotel at Creg ny Baa. In order to assist riders like Sheard with their braking on approach to this challenging bend, a yard broom would be left outside for spectators to sweep away any loose gravel from the road surface. This small act of kindness not only highlights the camaraderie and support within the racing community but also serves as a testament to how every little detail mattered when it came to achieving success on these demanding tracks. With its rich historical context and breathtaking action frozen in time, this print offers us a glimpse into an era where passion for speed and determination knew no bounds.
