This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful example of the naturalistic illustrations found in Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The illustration, titled "Anhima cornuta et Jacana jacana," depicts two waterbirds native to South America: the Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta) and the Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana). The Horned Screamer is easily identified by its distinctive horns and bright red wattles. It is a large, flightless bird that inhabits marshy areas and feeds on aquatic vegetation and small invertebrates. The Wattled Jacana, also known as the "lily pad bird," is characterized by its long, wattled legs and large feet, which enable it to walk on floating vegetation. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo in Paris.
