EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of Edinburgh in November 1824. The Old Town, once a bustling hub of Scotland's historic capital, lies in ruins as flames consume building after building. Smoke billows from the windows and rooftops, obscuring the once familiar skyline. The fire, which began on the night of November 2nd, raged for five days, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The cause of the fire remains a mystery, but it is believed to have started in a thatched roof in the Cowgate area. The narrow, winding streets and tightly packed buildings made it nearly impossible for the fire brigade to contain the blaze, which quickly spread from building to building. The fire department at the time consisted of only 12 men and 12 engines, a stark contrast to the well-equipped and trained services we have today. The fire destroyed over 700 buildings, leaving thousands of people homeless and in dire need of assistance. The disaster brought the community together, with locals and neighboring towns coming to the aid of those affected. Donations poured in, and temporary shelters were set up to house the displaced. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of fire and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The Old Town, which had stood for centuries, was rebuilt, and Edinburgh continued to thrive as a cultural and historical center of Scotland.
