Sheppard was a celebrated burglar and escape artist who gained fame in early 18th century London for his daring prison breaks. Born in London, Sheppard's life took a turn for the worse when he was apprenticed to a butcher at a young age. He soon turned to a life of crime, and by the age of 17, he had already been arrested for burglary. Despite multiple imprisonments, Sheppard's agility and cunning allowed him to escape from prison time and time again. His most famous escape from Newgate Prison in 1724, depicted in this print, was witnessed by a large crowd and made him a legend. Sheppard's exploits captured the imagination of the public, and he became a folk hero. Playwrights wrote plays about him, and ballads were sung about his daring escapes. However, his criminal exploits eventually caught up with him, and he was once again arrested and hanged in Tyburn on November 16, 1724.
