EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour and pencil drawing by Richard Dunscombe Parker depicts a charming pair of Little Auks (Alle alle), also known as Divers or Diving Petrels. The male and female are shown in their distinctive plumage, with the male sporting a black and white body and the female displaying a brownish-gray back and white underparts. Little Auks are small seabirds native to the North Atlantic Ocean, with a distinctive bulbous body shape and wings that are adapted for underwater flight. They are expert swimmers and divers, feeding primarily on fish and invertebrates. Parker's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures of the birds' feathers and the delicate rendering of their expressive faces. The artist has skillfully captured the dynamic interplay between the male and female, with the male gazing intently at the female and the female returning his gaze with a hint of curiosity. The drawing is executed on gummed paper, a traditional medium for watercolour and pencil work in the 19th century. The use of gum paper allowed for greater control over the application of watercolour and the creation of subtle gradations of colour. Richard Dunscombe Parker (1805-1881) was an Irish natural history illustrator and painter, known for his detailed and accurate depictions of birds and other natural subjects. His work was widely published in scientific and ornithological publications, and his drawings continue to be highly regarded for their beauty and precision. This beautiful watercolour and pencil drawing of Little Auks is a testament to Parker's skill and dedication to capturing the natural world in all its intricacy and beauty.
