EDITORS COMMENTS
At the Battle of Eckmühl on April 22, 1809, the French army, led by Marshal Davout and Marshal Lannes, decisively defeated the Austrian forces under the command of Archduke Charles. This pivotal engagement marked a significant turning point in the War of the Fifth Coalition, part of the larger Napoleonic Wars. The Battle of Eckmühl took place near the town of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany. The French army, outnumbered but determined, launched a surprise attack on the Austrian forces who were encamped along the Danube River. The initial Austrian defense was strong, but the French, utilizing their superior tactics and maneuverability, managed to outflank and surround the Austrian positions. Marshal Davout, commanding the French left wing, successfully crossed the Danube River and attacked the Austrian rear, while Marshal Lannes led the right wing in a fierce assault on the Austrian front. The Austrian forces, taken by surprise and outmaneuvered, were unable to hold their ground and began to retreat. The Battle of Eckmühl was a significant victory for the French, resulting in the capture of over 12,000 Austrian soldiers and the loss of 5,000 French soldiers. The victory allowed the French to continue their advance into Austria and ultimately led to the defeat of the Austrian army at the Battle of Wagram in July 1809. This photograph captures the aftermath of the Battle of Eckmühl, with the French army celebrating their victory over the defeated Austrian forces. The scene is one of triumph and jubilation, as the French soldiers revel in their hard-won victory and look forward to the next engagement in the ongoing Napoleonic Wars.
