At the Battle of Ocana, 19 November 1809: The French Army under Marshal André Masséna's successor, Marshal Jean-De-Dieu Soult, clashes with the Spanish forces led by General Francisco de Castaños y Bellvís, Marqués de Molina, under the command of General José de Palafox y Melci, Duke of Vicenza, and General Francisco Javier de Elío, Duke of Alcalá, in this pivotal engagement of the Peninsular War. The battle took place near the town of Ocana, in the province of Guadalajara, Spain. The Spanish forces, outnumbered but determined, initially held their ground against the advancing French troops. However, the arrival of additional French reinforcements under Marshal Michel Ney and Marshal Jean Lannes proved decisive. The Spanish lines began to crumble, and the French forces pressed their advantage, driving the Spanish back towards the town of Ocana. The Spanish forces, cornered and outnumbered, made a desperate stand at the bridge over the Guadaira River. The bridge was a crucial strategic point, as it was the only way for the Spanish to retreat. The fighting was fierce, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In the end, the Spanish forces were unable to hold the bridge, and they were forced to retreat towards Madrid. The French victory at Ocana was a significant turning point in the Peninsular War, as it allowed the French to continue their advance towards Madrid and ultimately secure their control of Spain.
