1751 1832 Philanthropist Priscilla Wakefield

EDITORS COMMENTS
Priscilla Wakefield (1751-1832): A Visionary Writer and Philanthropist This evocative portrait captures the essence of Priscilla Wakefield, an influential figure in 18th-century British literature and philanthropy. Born in London in 1751, Priscilla was the daughter of a prominent Quaker family. Her literary career began in her early twenties when she published her first novel, "The History of Mary Prince: A Novel," in 1783. This groundbreaking work, one of the earliest English novels to address the theme of mental illness, showcased Priscilla's keen insight and compassionate understanding of human nature. Priscilla's literary accomplishments did not stop there. She went on to write numerous other novels, essays, and translations, including "The History of the Young Marquess," "The History of the Countess of Dellwyn," and "Reflections on the French Revolution." Her works often explored social issues, offering thoughtful commentary on the moral and ethical dilemmas of the day. Beyond her literary pursuits, Priscilla was a dedicated philanthropist. She was a founding member of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge (S.P.C.K.), an organization that aimed to disseminate religious and educational materials to the masses. Priscilla's commitment to social welfare extended to the establishment of the Female Orphan Asylum in London, which provided shelter and education to destitute girls. This portrait, taken in the later years of Priscilla's life, captures the wisdom and compassion of a woman who dedicated herself to using her talents to improve the lives of others. Her enduring legacy as a writer and philanthropist continues to inspire generations.
