EDITORS COMMENTS

This powerful print captures a defining moment in the 1972 Munich Olympics - Mens 1500m race. In this intense Round One Heat Four, Jim Ryun of the United States experiences an unfortunate fall with only 500 meters to go at the iconic Olympiastadion in Munich, West Germany. Jim Ryun, who held the world record and was considered a strong contender for the gold medal, displayed remarkable resilience as he quickly regained his footing after hitting the ground. However, his valiant effort proved futile as he found himself hopelessly behind and failed to qualify for the semi-final. Despite this setback, Ryun's determination did not waver. The US Olympic Committee appealed against his disqualification, asserting that he had been tripped during the race. Regrettably, their plea was rejected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), effectively ending Ryun's journey in this prestigious competition. The photograph itself is a testament to both triumph and disappointment within sports. It showcases Ryun's unwavering spirit and refusal to give up even when faced with adversity on one of athletics' grandest stages. Captured by Colorsport photographer Stewart Fraser, this image serves as a reminder that success does not always come easily or without obstacles along the way.
