Kip Keino and Jim Ryun at the 1972 Munich Olympics

Athletics - 1972 Munich Olympics - Mens 1500m Round One Heat Four
Jim Ryun of the USA (#1008) with Kip Keino of Kenya (#576) in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany.
Keino won the heat and went on to win the silver medal in the final. Ryun, a favourite for the gold, was clipped at 1, 000m by Ghanas Billy Fordjour, and both fell to the track. Ryun got up a few seconds later but was hopelessly behind and did not qualify for the semi-final. As he crossed the line, Keino met him and tried to console him. The US Olympic Committee appealed, claiming Ryun was tripped, but was rejected by the IOC and he was out of the competition. EDITORS COMMENTS

This iconic print captures a poignant moment between two legendary athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Kip Keino of Kenya and Jim Ryun of the USA are seen in the midst of their Men's 1500m Round One Heat Four race at the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany. In this particular heat, Keino emerged victorious while Ryun was considered a favorite for the gold medal. However, tragedy struck as they approached the 1,000-meter mark when Ghana's Billy Fordjour accidentally clipped Ryun causing both runners to tumble onto the track. Although Ryun managed to get up shortly after, he found himself hopelessly behind and failed to qualify for the semi-final. As Ryun crossed the finish line with disappointment etched on his face, it was Keino who met him with compassion and attempted to console his fallen competitor. This act of sportsmanship showcased not only Keino's character but also highlighted how sport can bring out camaraderie even in moments of defeat. Despite an appeal by the US Olympic Committee claiming that Ryun had been tripped during the race, their plea was rejected by IOC officials resulting in his elimination from further competition. This powerful image captured by Colorsport photographer Stewart Fraser serves as a reminder that victory is not solely defined by medals but also through acts of kindness and support among athletes amidst fierce competition.
