EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the intense atmosphere of the 1981 Ashes Series between England and Australia. The image captures a moment during England's training session before the Second Ashes Test at Lords. Standing proudly in their cricket whites, the England team group is led by their captain Ian Botham. Positioned at the back row from left to right, we see Mike Gatting, Bob Woolmer, Peter Wiley, Graham Dilley, John Emburey, Graham Gooch, and David Gower. In front of them stands Bob Taylor and Bob Willis alongside captain Ian Botham himself. Completing the lineup is Geoffrey Boycott with Mike Hendrick serving as the 12th man. This particular test match proved challenging for Botham as he recorded a pair of ducks with his batting performance. However, despite this setback and being 1-0 down in the series at that point, Botham's resilience remained unwavering. He ultimately resigned from his captaincy before the Third Test but witnessed a remarkable turnaround under new skipper Mike Brearley. The following matches saw an extraordinary display of talent from Botham as he scored an impressive total of 399 runs while also taking 34 wickets throughout the series. His outstanding contributions played a pivotal role in England reclaiming victory over Australia with a final scoreline of 3-1. For his exceptional performances during this historic series against their arch-rivals Down Under, Ian Botham was deservedly
