EDITORS COMMENTS
This series of four photographs chronicles the significant transformations undergone by King George VI during the grand Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 1937. In the first image, the King arrives at the Abbey, proudly donning the crimson velvet Robe of State and the Cap of Estate, symbolizing his regal authority. Upon reaching the anointing chair, the King is invested with the Imperial Mantle of Cloth of Gold, intricately embroidered with golden eagles, as a sign of his imperial status. The second photograph captures this moment of investiture, where the mantle is draped over the King's shoulders, adding an aura of majesty and grandeur. In the third image, the King receives the Orb, a symbol of his power and authority, before handing it back and receiving the Sceptre with the Cross and the Sceptre with the Dove. These sceptres are emblematic of the temporal and spiritual powers of the monarchy. Finally, at the end of the ceremony, the King retires to St. Edward's Chapel to change into the Royal Purple Robe of State and wear the Imperial State Crown for his departure from the Abbey. This regal attire, featuring ermine trim and adorned with precious stones, is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy. These photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the ceremonial stages of a Coronation ceremony, providing a unique insight into the rituals, costumes, and regalia that have shaped the history of the British monarchy.
