Martin Luther (1483-1546) German theologian and leading figure in the Protestant Reformation. On 31st October 1517 he nailed to the door of a Wittenberg church his list of ninety five theses attacking papal sale of indulgences. Excommunicated by Pope Leo X in 1521.
